Boston Fourth of July Ceremony 2012: What You Need to Know

From Boston Pops-backed fireworks to porta-potties, here's all you need to know to plan your Independence Day festivities July 3 and 4.

Jennifer Hudson will headline the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular during the city's 39th annual Independence Day celebration. The fun starts Tues, July 3 at 6 p.m., with a concert at 8:30 p.m., followed by more festivities on Wed, July 4 as thousands of people from across the country will flock to the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade for live music, food, and of course, fireworks. The Oval (the area in front of the Hatch Shell) opens at 9 a.m. Wednesday with entertainment throughout the day and into the evening. Massachusetts Fire Marshall Warns Against Using Fireworks

"All fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts."

The following is information provided by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshall's Office: All fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. The possession and use of all fireworks by private citizens is illegal in Massachusetts. This includes Class C fireworks which are sometimes falsely called "safe and sane" such as sparklers, party poppers, snappers, firecrackers, spinners and cerry bombs, to name a few. Sparklers burn at 1800 degrees Farenheit. It is illegal to transport fireworks into Massachusetts, even if they were purchased legally elsewhere. Illegal fireworks can be confiscated on the spot. Do not purchase through mail-order or online catalogues. The distribution of mail-order catalogues that clearly state that fireworks are illegal in …

I find this law ridiculous. Accidents happen two examples from above, the individuals used fireworks indoors, the other two could have been a freak accident. Just don't get too wasted before setting them off ;)   more ›
