Medford, State Graduation Rates Up

Despite higher graduation rate, Medford's dropout rate creeped up 0.4 percent.

The four-year graduation rates for both Medford and the commonwealth overall were up for 2012 over 2011, according to figures released by the state Department of Education Friday.  The state said its dropout rate declined to 2.5 percent for 2011-2012, representing a fourth-straight year under 3 percent and "the lowest overall rate in decades." Medford finds itself below the state overall on graduation rate and above the state's dropout rate. The city's four-year graduation rate was 80.5 percent in 2012, up from 79.9 percent in 2011. Medford's dropout rate did creep up in 2012 to 8.1 percent from 7.7 percent. Mass. Outside Top 10 for Graduation Rate, Medford Above State Average

Massachusetts had an adjusted graduation rate of 83 percent for the 2010-2011 school year, while Medford High School's adjusted graduation rate that year was 91.4 percent.

Massachusetts didn't make the top 10 high school graduation rates in the nation, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, but Medford schools have a higher graduation rate than the state average. The graduation rates released Monday are for the 2010-2011 school year—the first year for which all states used a common, adjusted four-year cohort graduation rate, according to a U.S. Department of Education press release.
