New MBTA GM Talks Transit on ‘Greater Boston’

Beverly Scott was a guest on the WGBH show last week.

The new MBTA general manager addressed issues of unpredictable subways, lack of late night service and fare hikes on a popular local talk show Wednesday night. MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott was the guest on WGBH news talk show Greater Boston, where she said despite the complaints, T ridership is doing quite well. “The first thing I’ll say is our ridership is up,” she said. “I think that is a real testament to how critical…public transportation is.” “Greater Boston” host Emily Rooney asked Scott about the massive debt the MBTA needs to overcome. The debt is estimated at $9 billion. “You don’t eat an elephant all at one time,” Scott said. “One of the rules of digging is when you find yourself in a hole you’ve got to stop digging the …

Did they ask her what was the state of the transit system in Atlanta when she left? Failing miserably makes you desirable in Gov Patrick's eyes I guess.   more ›

$45 Million Green Line Extension Design Contract Approved

Meeting in Somerville, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors approved a contract that will help the Green Line Extension apply for federal funding.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors, meeting in Somerville, authorized a $45 million contract for design of the Green Line Extension. "This is actually beginning to put meat on the bone," said MassDOT Secretary Richard Davey after the vote, speaking about how the design effort will progress with the contract in place. "It's a great step forward for the project today," he said. The contract, awarded to AECOM Technical Services, Inc. and HNTB Corporation, is for advanced preliminary and final design services on the Green Line Extension. As part of the contract, the design team will prepare documents that will be used in the next stage of the state's application for federal funding. The project, expected to be …

Most stations have their share of beggars and persons' exposing themselves- ask any woman who travels the T on a regular basis. And niw for the list - Just drive by Oak Grove or Wellington and try to park and take the train. Number 1 - You have a shot in hell of getting a parking spot after 8 AM. So …   more ›

Green Line Extension Planning Moves Ahead

A summary of what's been happening with the Green Line Extension since last summer's news of delays.

News last year that the long-awaited Green Line extension, once expected to be complete by October, 2015, was delayed further, with a completion date now set for 2018 or 2020, raised questions about the state's commitment to the project. In the past two months, regional transportation planners have continued moving forward with the project, and there's been a round of relatively good news for advocates. Here are some quick updates about the Green Line Extension: The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is responsible for mapping out transportation projects in the region, has included the Green Line Extension project in a draft report, giving the project, for now, its blessing. The Transportation Improvement Program …

Green Line Workshop Gives Glimpse of College Ave Station Design

Design officials for the Green Line Extension held a community meeting last night at the Tufts campus.

Detailed designs haven't been made yet, but planners said they intend to create a large, plaza area with pedestrian access for nearby neighborhoods at the College Avenue green line station in Medford. Architects showed preliminary plans for a green line stop at the intersection of Boston Avenue and College Avenue at a design workshop Tuesday night. They also took questions and comments from members of the public, who were broken into small groups to speak with project experts at the workshop, held on the Tufts campus. The input will be used going forward in the design process. Project managers aim to award a request for proposal by summer 2012, said Karen Arpino, deputy project manager for Gilbane Building Company. The current plans place …
