Temporary bridge over Mystic River is part of the plans for major Medford bridge reconstruction.
MassDOT officials and Medford legislative delegation members were on hand Tuesday night to present the Medford City Council new plans for the reconstruction of the Cradock Bridge. The historic bridge is a major one for travel into and out of Medford Square, carrying traffic over the Mystic River on Main Street near the on- and off-ramps to Route 16. A temporary bridge is part of the plans, as part of an effort by engineers to minimize the impact on traffic and local businesses. The temporary bridge would extend from a temporary Route 16 off-ramp, over the river to Clippership Drive, with access to Riverside Avenue for vehicles turning left. MassDOT will show plans to the Medford council next month, project expected to commence spring 2014.
Designs for reconstruction of the Cradock Bridge in Medford Square to begin in spring 2014 will be presented to the Medford City Council at a meeting next month. According to a statement from Medford's legislative delegation and Mayor Michael McGlynn released Friday afternoon, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will present the plans to the council April 2. Back in 2011, the project was anticipated to cost $2.5 million. The original bridge was built 1637, rebuilt in 1880 and again in 1909, according to a Medford Historical Society sign on the bridge. Fare hikes and service cuts are a few options T officials proposed in an effort to close the $130 million budget deficit in 2014.
MBTA officials have proposed service cuts and fare increases if there is no increase in funding, based on a $130 projected budget deficit in fiscal year 2014. Director of Strategic Initiatives for the MBTA Charles Planck said at a MBTA finance committee meeting that in order to close the budget gap, T fares would need to go up 33 percent, which means subway fares would move up from $2 to $2.60, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday. The major highway through Boston will close due to work on the Zakim Bridge and the O’Neill tunnel.
A major Boston highway will close overnight to make way for work on the Zakim Brudge and O’Neill Tunnel. The Department of Transportation will shut down the southbound side of I-93 between 11 p.m. Tuesday night and 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to CBS Boston. MassDOT will divert traffic at the Route 38 Mystic Avenue exit and will be able to continue on I-93 at the exit near South Station, CBS Boston reports.

The state Department of Transportation is required to hold public meetings in advance of developing a long-term financing plan for the state’s transportation system next year.
Residents can hear from state transportation officials and ask questions about the MBTA, MassHighway and more at the McGlynn Middle School Auditorium on Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 6-8 p.m. According to a press release from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), legislation passed in August requires MassDOT to host at least six public meetings in advance of developing a long-term financing plan for the state’s transportation system next year. If you've gone up Interstate 95 into New Hampshire, you've seen high-speed tolling in action. The system is designed to read your EZ-Pass (nee Fast Lane) transponder while you breeze by at 65 miles per hour. There's no need to slow down or squeeze though a booth, as EZ-Pass users currently do on the Mass Pike, Tobin Bridge and harbor tunnels. Replacing the Cradock Bridge in Medford Square will cost about $8.5 million and take three construction seasons to complete, according to state officials. At least three lanes will be open for traffic at all times during construction on the bridge, which takes cars and pedestrians on Main Street over the Mystic River. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2014, Project Manager Paul King said during a presentation to the Medford City Council last week. The design features of the new bridge will include small arches and other design details that are considered historic elements of the current bridge, built in 1909, King said.
