Medford Motorcycle Repair Shop Relocating

Aero Cycle Co. will be moving from Boston Avenue to Mystic Avenue.

A long-standing Medford motorcycle repair shop will be moving to a new location following approval by the Medford City Council Tuesday evening. Aero Cycle Co., currently located 642 Boston Ave., will stay within Medford but will be moving to 401 Mystic Ave. Medford attorney Robert Abruzese, who represented owner Paul Morrissey at Tuesday's meeting, said the move is taking place due in part to the impact of the Green Line extension and the need for additional room. Abruzese said the Mystic Avenue location has been the site of "a number of prior automotive repair shop licenses." Morrissey first opened a shop in Somerville in 1979 and moved in the late-'80s to his current location, according to Abruzese. Speaking in favor of the move, …

Councilor: Medford Library Restrooms 'Deplorable'

Michael Marks said he won't support a new city budget if money isn't spent to renovate the public restrooms at the library.

A Medford City Councilor told Patch this week he will not support the upcoming city budget if funds are not appropriated to renovate the public restrooms at the Medford Public Library. Councilor Michael Marks said these public restrooms have not received any kind of significant renovation since the library was constructed in 1959. He's been hearing from constitutents who are concerned about the "deplorable" conditions of the restrooms. "I refer to these as prison bathrooms, because that's what they both remind me of," Marks said. Both restrooms deal with ventilation issues and Marks pointed out the stall to the women's room doesn't have a door, causing a privacy issue. Library patrons must be buzzed into the restrooms by library staff. In …

Having to be buzzed into the bathroom is a safety issue. When you go in you know there is no one in there. And since you are always buzzed in there is no privacy issue because you are in there alone or with your friends or family. The door is missing for access for those with disabilities. It is not facing the toilet so if you go in the ladies room with a family member or friend you still have …   more ›

Medford Council to Tackle Taxi Ordinance

Concerns abound that some Medford taxi operators are going to other communities to pick up fares.

The Medford City Council will begin the process of updating the city's ordinance on taxi cabs that hasn't seen many changes in around 20 years. At Tuesday night's committee of the whole meeting, the council discussed a wide range of issues surrounding taxi operations in the community. Chief among the concerns of councilors in the perception, and in some cases the reality, that some taxi operators with Medford licenses are taking their cabs to surrounding cities and towns and soliciting fares. "I just want to have something that provides some real clarity to the cab owners for what they can and cannot do," said City Clerk Ed Finn, who has seen a major influx of applications for cab licenses in Medford in the last year.  City Councilor …

Council Wants Medford to Seek Casino 'Surrounding Community' Status

City could seek mitigation for damages if a casino is built in Everett.

The Medford City Council resolved Tuesday night to take initial steps in address the possible impacts of a casino in a nearby community. While plans for a casino in Everett not far from the Medford border continue to be formulated, Medford councilor Breanna Lungo-Koehn wants to get ahead of the game. She recently attended a Medford Chamber of Commerce luncheon where Massachusetts Gaming Commissioner Stephen Crosby was the featured speaker. "The gaming commissioner gave a very informative talk, although we weren't too happy to hear what he had to say," said Lungo-Koehn. Lungo-Koehn said Medford is powerless to keep a casino from going to a neighboring community like Everett. But Medford could achieve the status of a "surrounding community" …

Medford would be designated as a "surrounding community" if a casino is built in Everett.

Medford City Councilor Breanna Lungo-Koehn wants the city council to discuss the possibility of a casino being constructed "extremely close" to Medford. Lungo-Koehn's resolution is on the agenda for tonight's meeting, which will start at 7 in the Howard F. Alden Auditorium at Medford City Hall. You can see the whole agenda here. According to the resolution on the agenda, Lungo-Koehn wants to see the council meet with Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn at a potential committee of the whole meeting to discuss the matter. Crisco I drive through the area frequently. The Gaming Commission has indeed put in a requirement as Paul says for mitigation for surrounding communities. My comment was in regard to the general opposition by Medford and Somerville to the casino going in Everett. Both cities have put massive developments in the Wellington area along Routes 28 (the Fellsway) and Route 16. The impact to traffic …   more ›
