New Medford Bicycle Commission Members Selected

There were originally 40 applicants for what ended up being the 15-member commission.

Last Friday, the city of Medford introduced the members of the newly-formed city Bicycle Advisory Commission at a press conference at Medford City Hall. Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn said the commission has been put together in part to come up with "safe routes" for bicycling throughout the city. "We want to make sure riding is more enjoyable and safe," he said. Residents Bruce Kulik, David Lubell and Susan Altman of Green Medford were community leaders who spearheaded efforts to find members and Kulik said he was "pleasantly surprised" that 40 people applied for what was originally going to be a 10-member commission. In the end, Kulik said it was decided the commission should have 15 members. Surveying riders, mapping the city, connecting…

Bad Winter Puts Medford in $732K Budget Deficit

McGlynn says his goal will be to eliminate the debt instead of carrying it over to next year.

An historically harsh winter has put Medford in the red. At a press conference Friday, Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn announced the city has a $732,000 deficit in its winter operations budget for the current fiscal year. "That's probably an average figure for most of the communities of our size around us," McGlynn said. It's due to what McGlynn said was the fifth-most severe winter in terms of overall snowfall for Medford since 1892, the first year it was recorded. McGlynn said the city originally budgeted around $300,000 for winter operations, and the city was over budget even before the massive February blizzard that dropped two feet of snow on the city. The deficit comes from labor and contract costs, oil, gas, sand, salt, repairs and …

Medford Honors Bombing Victims With Large Flag

The 45-by-90-feet flag was hoisted this morning across the front of City Hall.

The city of Medford honored those impacted by the bombing attacks at the Boston Marathon April 15 with a massive, 45-by-90-feet American flag draped over Medford City Hall Monday. "The American Flag symbolizes respect for all of the victims. It helps to bring people together and highlights the fact that we are strong and our flag will always fly freely and boldly," said Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn in a statement Monday. According to the city, the flag was commissioned shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It will be unfurled until dusk Monday, according to the city. Medford native Krystle Campbell was among the victims in the bombings and she was laid to rest in Medford Monday.

Medford City Council President Bob Maiocco delivered remarks at the burial ground on the 59 Medford minutemen who "marched to a small settlement in nearby Lexington to participate in the opening battle of the Revolutionary War" 238 years ago. Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian spoke about the great turnout at the event each year, as well as the presence of many children. "Living in an area that has such a rich tradition, we should be embracing this opportunity to teach our children every time, shouldn't we?" Koutoujian said. Medford Mayor Michael …
