Boston Herald reports a Honda sedan went through the brick wall of the pharmacy.
The Boston Herald reported a silver Honda sedan drove off the road on Route 16 at Wellington Circle in Medford Friday afternoon, going through the brick wall of a CVS Pharmacy and injuring the driver and two people inside the store. According to the Herald, the driver sustained upper body and facial injuries while one person inside the store suffered leg and knee injuries and another in the store suffered an elbow injury. Medford Fire told the Herald the vehicle was removed from the building and the city building department found it did not hit any structural component or gas or electrical supplies. New school security system being also implemented.
Equipment upgrades are on the way for Medford Police and Fire personnel, according to Mayor Michael McGlynn. The city is planning to purchase five new police cruisers for the Medford Police Department and three new command vehicles for the Medford Fire Department, McGlynn said recently. New cruisers will cost the city and initial payment of about $50,000, while the first payment on the new fire command vehicles will cost about $35,000. McGlynn said the fire deparment currently has several command vehicles that are "somewhat aged." The American Red Cross assisted two families that included a total of 12 people from a Chipman Street dwelling.
UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Medford Fire Deputy Chief Scott Graham said no one was injured in the Chipman Street fire, which started in the basement of the dwelling and was contained there by responding companies. Graham said the cause of the fire is under investigation. The home suffered smoke damage to the first and second floors and water damage in the basement, according to Graham. Crews on scene stretched a line into the home and through an "aggressive interior attack" were able to prevent the fire from spreading further. Emergency communications reports indicate fire is on South Border Road.
According to emergency communication reports, a large brush fire is currently burning on South Border Road in Medford near the Winchester town line. Reports indicated that around 2 p.m. the fire was burning and Medford engines on scene had run out of water. According to reports, the fire is burning on a state reservation and the Department of Conservation and Recreation has been called to the scene. Medford Fire deputy said there as no bomb inside the pressure cooker.
Medford Fire Deputy Chief Steve Howe said the Meadow Glen Mall was evacuated around 12:15 p.m. Saturday after a report of a suspicious device found outside the mall. It turned out the device was a pressure cooker but the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad determined it was not a bomb, Howe said. Pressure cookers were allegedly used for both bombs in the Boston Marathon bombings April 15. Howe said once he got on he saw the device leaned up against a clothing deposit box outside the mall. From there he requested more units to the scene and the state police bomb squad. Fire started in the kitchen of an apartment on Riverside Avenue.
Two people were injured and four people were displaced in a fire at a senior apartment housing complex on Riverside Avenue early Sunday morning, according to Boston.com. Medford Fire told Boston.com the fire started in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment of the 14-story building. One person was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital with burns and one other person was injured, according to Boston.com. The fire caused smoke damage through the building and water damage on the first and second floors, Boston.com reported. A total of 26 new public safety personnel are expected to start in the city in the next year.
Medford public safety personnel will be getting reinforcements in the coming months after facing staffing shortages through the difficult economy. During last week's mayoral press conference, Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn and Police Chief Leo Sacco, Jr. discussed the new additions both the Police and Fire departments will be receiving. McGlynn said between new police officers and firefighters the city will be filling 26 positions over the next year. "Over the last 18 months, we're turning the corner," McGlynn said. Medford firefighters responded to the fire around 6 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Medford firefighters put out a two-alarm fire early Thursday morning at a block of stores on Main Street, according to public safety transmissions. Firefighters first responded around 6 a.m. to 363 Main St., where the officer in charge reported a fire in the basement of the store block with possible extension to the first floor. Fox 25 reported that the fire broke out in Chromatic Tattoo Studio & Body Piercing, which is located at 365 Main St., before spreading to other adjacent businesses.
