Officials: Medford Will Not Tolerate Hateful Graffiti

Police chief said around 20 spots were hit with swastikas, anti-Semitic statements Saturday night.

Local officials and clergy members gathered Monday on a South Medford basketball court hit by anti-Semitic graffiti over the weekend to reject the efforts of vandals to spread hate speech. "Today, we again say with one voice that these hateful messages and symbols will not be be tolerated in our community, in our home," said Mayor Michael McGlynn at the press conference. Medford Police Chief Leo Sacco said around 20 different spots around the Columbus Elementary School and the nearby Columbus Park were hit with the graffiti. Sacco said more hateful messages were found on street signs on Willis Avenue, across Main Street to Tufts Park and the Curtis Tufts School as well as side streets between Main Street and several Tufts University …

One Charged, One at Large in Store Robbery

One suspect showed a knife while the other assaulted a clerk with an "aerosol spray."

Medford Police recently arrested one suspect and are still seeking another in an armed robbery that took place at Fred's Gas Station on Mystic Avenue late last month. Jesus Carrasquillo, 19, of 889 County St. in New Bedford, was arrested Feb. 7 by police and charged with armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon for his alleged role in the robbery. A second suspect remains at large, according to Medford Police Capt. Kevin Faller.  Faller said the two suspects entered the shop on Jan. 29 and stole cash after the second suspect allegedly showed a knife and Carrasquillo allegedly used an "aerosol spray" on a shop clerk. Three Face Cocaine Charges After Jerome St. Raid

One of the arrested, John Viera, was a victim in a shooting that killed his son in 2011.

Three people were charged with cocaine-related offenses in Tuesday morning's raid at 55 Jerome St. in Medford. One of those arrested was John Viera, 62, of that address, who was a victim in the Feb. 2011 shooting at the residence that killed his son, John Hatch, 36. Medford Police Capt. Kevin Faller could not provide details on any possible links between the two cases, referring those questions to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. One person, Gerald Sullivan of Charlestown, was charged in the summer of 2011 in connection with the shooting. Viera was charged with a single count of possession to distrbute cocaine. One Arrested on Jerome St. Drug Warrant

Police say search warrant still ongoing.

UPDATE, 11 a.m.: Medford Police Capt. Kevin Faller told Patch one suspect has been arrested as a result of the warrant served at 55 Jerome St. Tuesday. Faller could not identify the suspect. He said the search warrant was still being executed as of just before 11 a.m. and charges were not yet specified. "This is still ongoing," Faller said.  Medford Police conducted the investigation that led to the warrant and Faller said the NEMLEC SWAT team was brought to assist in serving it. There are two separate residences at 55 Jerome St. and Faller said there are warrants to search each. Schools hope to re-open tomorrow; emergency parking ban still in effect.

Medford Patch will keep you updated with the latest information on what's happening as the city continues to clean up from one of the biggest blizzards in recent memory. Medford Public Schools are closed once again Tuesday. In a statement released Monday afternoon, officials are hopeful enough snow-clearing work can be done Tuesday to allow schools to open again Wednesday. "The DPW is cleaning bus stops (Monday) and will continue to do so (Tuesday)," according to a statement from the city. Maybe if the city would hire professionals to remove the snow there wouldn't be such an alarming number of streets that are still impassable. Snow Emergency Declared in Medford

Starting Friday at 8 a.m. parking is banned on emergency arteries.

According to the Medford Police Department's website, a snow emergency for Medford will go into effect starting at 8 a.m. Friday as a blizzard is expected to hit the region. What does this mean? "During declared snow emergencies, on the designated streets cars can be ticketed and towed," the police website says. UPDATE: Medford Police Seeking Bank Robbery Suspect

Suspect sought in East Cambridge Savings Bank robbery from last Thursday.

UPDATE, 9:30 a.m.: Medford Police Capt. Kevin Faller said the robbery suspect showed a black handgun during the incident and got away on a bicycle with an undetermined amount of cash. Faller said the robbery took place at the 243 Salem St. East Cambridge Savings Bank location last Thursday at approximately 4:40 p.m. According to Faller, the suspect was wearing a full ski mask, making it difficult to provide a full description. The suspect is a white male standing about 5-feet, 8-inches tall, Faller said. He walked into the bank, according to Faller, showing the handgun while passing a note to a female teller. Suspect in Three Medford Robberies Arrested

Jonathan Williams, 31, of Revere, is also accused of holding up the QuickStop Somerville convenience store. Police say they received several tips from the public.

Police arrested a 31-year-old Revere man in connection to three armed robberies in Medford last week as well as Sunday's brazen armed robbery of the QuickStop Somerville convenience store. Jonathan Williams was arrested Wednesday in Woburn without incident, according to an announcement from Somerville police. According to the announcement, detectives received tips form the public and other sources that led them to Williams. The Somerville Police Department had release surveillance video of Sunday's robbery. The video depicted a man brandishing a pistol as he stole nearly $1,000 from the store's cash register and money box. UPDATE: One Arrest, One Summons For Wellington Incident

Suspects reportedly arrested in Medford after a report for an assault at Wellington Station.

UPDATE, 9:45 a.m.: MBTA Deputy Press Secretary Kelly Smith said Transit Police were dispatched to Wellington at 12:18 a.m. Wednesday for "a disturbance involving two individuals engaged in a fight where there was punching and kicking."
