Medford Schools Back in Session Wednesday

Motorists asked to drive slowly and buses expected to run slower Wednesday.

After three days off, Medford schools will be back in session Wednesday, according to an e-mail from Medford Public Schools Superintendent Roy Belson. Schools were closed Friday, Monday and Tuesday due to one of the biggest blizzards in the history of the region. Medford received two feet of snow from the Blizzard of 2013 and the clean-up is ongoing. Belson said that while sidewalks and bus stops are "improved," parents and guardians are being asked "to work with each other to escort young children to school and to wait with them at bus stops. "We ask motorists to drive very slowly and be alert for pedestrian traffic," Belson said. "Our Buses will run a little slower so be patient. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation." Here is …

Schools hope to re-open tomorrow; emergency parking ban still in effect.

Medford Patch will keep you updated with the latest information on what's happening as the city continues to clean up from one of the biggest blizzards in recent memory. Medford Public Schools are closed once again Tuesday. In a statement released Monday afternoon, officials are hopeful enough snow-clearing work can be done Tuesday to allow schools to open again Wednesday. "The DPW is cleaning bus stops (Monday) and will continue to do so (Tuesday)," according to a statement from the city. "In addition, they will continue to knock down high mounds of snow for the safety of children walking to school and for those who wait for the bus to get into work." If Medford "fared very well", why is it Tuesday and Arlington, Winchester, and Woburn have school yet our children do not? Maybe if the city would hire professionals to remove the snow there wouldn't be such an alarming number of streets that are still impassable. Medford Public Schools Closed Friday

Decision made early ahead of what's expected to be an historic blizzard.

Medford Public Schools will be closed Friday due to the impending blizzard expected to hit the area. In a statement posted on the district website, Superintendent Roy Belson said the notice was being posted early "so as to allow parents/guardians to make appropriate arrangements for the coverage and care of their children if they are required to report to work." School Professional Development Day Changed

Students will have school March 5 and won't have school April 9 after the change.

Medford Public Schools announced a calendar change Tuesday that will impact the scheduling of a professional development day later this school year. Originally, a professional development day was scheduled for Tuesday, March 5. On their website, Medford Public Schools announced that off-day for students has been changed to Tuesday, April 9. As a result, Medford will have school March 5 and will not have school April 9.

New Payment System for Medford School Meals

An electronic meal ID system is being put in place Jan. 23.

The Medford School District recently announced upcoming changes to its school meal payment system. Starting Jan. 23, the school meal service in Medford schools will change to an electronic meal ID system. The district said this will replace the need for current paper tickets that can often get lost. Here is more from the school district: Students will continue to use their current ID number or Student ID Card that they have been using. This ID number will stay with the student until he/she graduates. Please encourage your student to make sure they have their ID card and to NOT give out their number. Pompeo Remembered by School District

Memorial services will be held today and tomorrow for former Mayor, educator and WWII veteran.

Memorial services will be held today and tomorrow for beloved former Medford public servant, educator, World War II veteran, father and husband Alfred Pompeo, Sr. Medford Public Schools posted a statement on their website yesterday honoring Pompeo's life and service to the community as well as his obituary. Pompeo passed away at 94 this week at his summer home on Drakes Island in Wells, Maine. "Mr. Pompeo was a dedicated educator and public official whose life’s work contributed significantly to the betterment of our community," the school district wrote in the statement. Pompeo started as a teacher in the 1940s and retired years later as Director of Guidance and Special Needs for Medford. He served as Medford's mayor from 1956-1957, …
