With the announcement that a Medford woman and Woburn man were arrested for running a prostitution ring, police said Monday was a major victory in shutting down the alleged pattern of "modern day slavery."
Law enforcement officials said Monday that a pair of human trafficking arrests were not only a major victory for police, but also the women at the center of the ring who are considered the victims of “modern day slavery.” During a Monday press conference at the Wilmington Police Department, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced that Xiu J. Chen, 32, of Medford, and Ronald Keplin, 57, of Woburn, will each face charges on one of trafficking of persons for sexual servitude, six counts of deriving support from prostitution and six counts of keeping a house of ill fame. “In this case we allege that these individuals ran a large scale criminal operation involving the sale and sexual exploitation of other human beings for their profit,” said …

Suspect allegedly passed a note at East Cambridge Savings Bank saying he had a gun while demanding money.
A man from Malden was arrested Wednesday afternoon shortly after he allegedly robbed the East Cambridge Savings Bank at 243 Salem St. in Medford. Medford Police Capt. Kevin Faller said the suspect was arrested in Malden could not provide his name. Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis said the arrest took place at a Russell Street home in his city. Faller said the suspect is being charged with armed robbery while masked. According to Faller, the suspect entered the bank around 2:53 p.m. Wednesday wearing a ski mask and handed a note to the teller that said he had a gun and demanded money. New school security system being also implemented.
Equipment upgrades are on the way for Medford Police and Fire personnel, according to Mayor Michael McGlynn. The city is planning to purchase five new police cruisers for the Medford Police Department and three new command vehicles for the Medford Fire Department, McGlynn said recently. New cruisers will cost the city and initial payment of about $50,000, while the first payment on the new fire command vehicles will cost about $35,000. McGlynn said the fire deparment currently has several command vehicles that are "somewhat aged."
