Leone will join the law firm of Nixon Peabody on April 29.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone is stepping down from his office to join the law firm of Nixon Peabody, the same firm former Sen. Scott Brown earlier this month said he was joining. An announcement from Nixon Peabody says Leone will join the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice beginning April 29. A woman at the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed the news, but did not have further details. Leone was first elected as Middlesex district attorney in 2006, and his current term in office was up in 2014. He previously stated he would not run for reelection at the end of his term. Stanley and Stephen Komins are not to leave Massachusetts while their charges are pending.
A Somerville District Court judge ordered a father and son accused of embezzling more than $50,000 from the West Medford Little League to surrender their passports and not leave the Commonwealth while their charges are pending. Stanley Komins, 78, and is son, Stephen Komins, 45, both of Stoneham, appeared before Judge Neil Walker Friday morning for arraignment on their charges. Not guilty pleas were entered for both. Stanley Komins was the longtime president of the league's board of directors while Stephen Komins spent many years as the league's treasurer. Stanley Komins said "No, no way" when asked by a Fox 25 reporter about the charges that he and his son Stephen Komins stole over $50,000 from the West Medford Hillside Little League.
Stanley Komins was "seemingly unaware of the charges filed against him and his son" according to a Fox 25 reporter who spoke with Komins about him allegedly embezzling more than $50,000 from the West Medford Hillside Little League. "No, no way," Komins said when Fox 25 reporter Erica Ricci told him about the charges at Komins' Stoneham home. When Ricci said authorities have charged that Komins' wrote checks to himself from the league account, Komins responded, "Sure, because they owed me money. Why shouldn't I reimburse me? I spent hundreds of dollars for the little league on umpires and everything else. But I really, I have no idea." Howie Winter, former head of the Winter HIll Gang, is accused of demanding money from businessmen who made a loan without consent from the North End.
The Medford Sons of Italy Hall, at 42 Alfred St., plays a role in an extortion case involving Howie Winter, former boss of the notorious Winter Hill Gang. Winter, 83, of Millbury, was scheduled to be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court Tuesday morning on extortion charges, according to an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney's office. He will be arraigned with James Melvin, 70, of Braintree, the announcement says. According to the district attorney's office, Winter and Melvin allegedly tried to extort tens of thousands of dollars from two businessmen, making threatening statements and phone calls and leaving a threatening note at one victim's home.
