The Medford representative made $2,180 for taking an "often-criticized benefit," according to the Boston Herald.
Medford Rep. Paul Donato was one of several state legislators mentioned in a Boston Herald article this week regarding per diem reimbursements for commuting to the State House. Donato put in for 218 days for 2011 and was paid $2,180, according to state records published by the Herald. The paper called the reimbursements an "oft-criticized benefit" for legislators. The Herald reported the House only had 119 formal sessions in 2011. Donato told the paper he often has to run sessions when Speaker Robert A. DeLeo is not present.

Beyond local aid, the city could lose funding from the state for special education, homeless student aid and charter school reimbursements in the half-billion proposal Gov. Deval Patrick released Tuesday.
Medford could lose between $204,000 and $229,000 in aid from state government, Mayor Michael McGlynn said, as part of the half-billion worth of cuts that Gov. Deval Patrick proposed on Tuesday, in anticipation of the "fiscal cliff" combined with projected state tax revenues that are more than $500,000 lower than previously expected. "The uncertainty of the fiscal cliff and the resulting slow down in growth, is the direct cause of our budget challenges," Patrick said. "Congress and the President must come to terms on a solution so the private sector will continue to make the kind of investments that create jobs, grow state and federal tax revenue collections and contribute to a lasting economic recovery." McGlynn told Medford Patch that …

Donato says no to Death with Dignity Act.
State Rep. Paul Donato, D-Malden/Medford, is urging Massachusetts voters to say no to assisted suicide, according to a statement from his office. “Regardless of where a person stands on the issue of physician-assisted suicide, Question 2 – as designed – contains serious flaws, such the lack of a psychiatric evaluation and no family notification,” Donato said in a written statement. “For these reasons and others, I encourage the voters of Medford and Malden to reject Question 2 on November 6.” Also known as the Death with Dignity Act, Question 2, which will be on state ballots for the Nov. 6 election, calls for physicians licensed in Massachusetts to be allowed to prescribe medication, at the request of a terminally-ill patient meeting …

I wouldn't use the term "begrudge" in this case, Paul. To me it's not a case of "is it worth it" or "does he deserve it" but rather one of "times are tough, money is tight, everyone has to do their part to cut down - could you brown bag it for awhile?" Look at Congress for example. Congress being unable to create a balanced budget has created a problem. To solve (or perhaps "deal with" paints a …   more ›
