Medford Braces For Another Snow Storm

Another 4 to 8 inches of snow could fall in Medford starting Wednesday night through Friday morning, according to forecasters, as another storm heads towards southern New England.

Punxsutawney Phil's prognostication back on Groundhog Day for an early spring is increasingly looking like a cruel joke on the public. Medford could see between 4 and 8 inches of snow starting Wednesday night through Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), which issued a winter storm watch on Tuesday night. "There is still some uncertainty with snowfall amounts, but this storm will have a significant impact on southern New England," the NWS said.  The forecast calls for a chance of rain showers during the day on Wednesday, as the high temperature will hover near 42 degrees with a steady northeast wind between 13 and 21 miles per hour and gusts as high as 36 miles per hour. How Much Snow Will Medford Get This Weekend?

Potential snowfall locally varies according to forecasts.

It appears another major winter storm is headed to the region this weekend, but just exactly how much snow Medford will get appears to be up in the air. Chris Lambert of WHDH said the snow is expected to start between 4 and 7 p.m. Saturday. Rain will be mixed in with snow along the coast, according to Lambert, and that will be changed over to wet snow by Sunday morning. In places where there will only be snow, Lambert expects the snow to total about a foot. NECN's Matt Noyes said over a foot of snow is possible for some interior communities in the storm that is expected to develop Saturday afternoon and last into Sunday afternoon. S'No More! 3-7 Inches of Snow Saturday Into Sunday

Medford could see around a half a foot of more snow Saturday night into Sunday.

There's still huge snowbanks everywhere from the Blizzard of '13, even after moderate temperatures this week, but Old Man Winter isn't done with Medford yet. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until Sunday at 1 p.m. for a storm that will pass through the area starting Saturday night. The forecast calls for 1-3 inches of snow on Saturday night and another 2-4 inches on Sunday, mainly before 4 p.m. Visibility won't be great either, as winds could gust as high as 43 mph on Sunday, blowing the snow around and producing wind chill values as low as -2 on Sunday night. The gusty winds will continue on Presidents Day, which will be sunny with a high near 32 but wind chill values as low as -4.

Avoid a Roof Collapse: Clear Snow From Your Rooftop

Light, fluffy snow on rooftops can act as a sponge for rain, which is in the forecast for Monday. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency offers these tips.

With rain in Medford's forecast for Monday, the Blizzard of '13 may not be finished wreaking havoc in Massachusetts. While temperatures dropped overnight on Friday resulting in light, fluffy snow, he Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) warns that fluffy snow piled high on roofs can act as a sponge, absorbing rain and adding additional stress to structures. Relatively flat roofs are particularly vulnerable, MEMA says. In other cases, roof ice dams have formed causing water build-up, leading to interior damage. These conditions can accelerate the snowmelt. Blizzard Warning Issued for Medford

White out conditions are expected as the storm intensifies.

What began as a blizzard watch for the Medford area has now been upgraded to a blizzard warning.  The National Weather Service issued the warning for the majority of Eastern Massachusetts Thursday afternoon, as it anticipates about 2 feet of snow to descend upon the area Friday into Saturday. "White out conditions are anticipated as roads become snow-covered by the Friday evening commute," the warning states. "Strong north-northeast winds are anticipated with gusts up to around 60 miles per hour, resulting in blowing and drifting of snow. Damage to trees and structures along with scattered power outages are anticipated." NWS Issues Blizzard Watch for Medford, Eastern Mass.

Between 12 and 24 inches of snow accumulation is expected, beginning Friday morning.

As of 3:19 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Middlesex County and much of Massachusetts from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon.  According to NWS, much the state will be impacted by heavy snow with accumulation of 12 to 24 inches with the potential for blizzard conditions. The NWS previously forecast 14 to 18 inches in the Medford area. That total has been increased to 18 to 24 inches in the latest forecast. (See photo.) Light snow is expected to begin by Friday morning and increase in intensity throughout the day with the heaviest snowfall occurring Friday night into Saturday morning.
