In our "Visions for Vacancies" series, we ask you what you'd like to see in vacant buildings or lots around Medford.
Each month Medford Patch presents a new vacant building or lot and asks you to tell us what you think would be the best use for it. Forget what zone it's in, setback regulations and all the other zoning jargon that puts most people to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? This month's vacancy is the old Deb's Place Hair Salon space in West Medford, at 470 High St. What do you think should go in this storefront? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Vittorio Ettore, owner of Bistro 5 in West Medford, plans to open a new restaurant in the current Parsons Table space in mid-November.
If you’re already missing Parsons Table, which is closing this month, don’t fret too much: Vittorio Ettore, owner of Bistro 5 in West Medford, is moving in. Ettore’s new restaurant will be A Tavola, Italian for “at the table,” and is expected to open at 34 Church St. in Winchester in mid-November. Ettore describes A Tavola as “farm-to-table eclectic Italian.” The feel will be a bit more casual and rustic than Bistro 5, but with a continued focus on fresh, local ingredients. Ettore will bring cooking techniques from his native Italy to foods found here in the United States and will also add his own twists to the cuisine. Though he is still working out the full menu, he knows there will be two signature dishes. One is a whole roasted pig, an…

Retired principal has collected over 2,000 signatures.
Marie Rizzo remembers West Medford's old five and dime. And the A & P. And the bakery that was across the street from it. But those places are all memories now. She doesn't want the West Medford Post Office to join them as things of the past. Rizzo, a resident of West Medford for over 60 years, has distributed petitions asking the Post Office Inspector General to keep the branch open. By her tally, she's collected over 2,000 signatures so far. "I just took it upon myself to do it. It was a lot more than I thought but I’m very happy I’m doing it," she said. "I just was tired of all these symbols of our community being torn away." The post office at 485 High Street is one of 43 in the state that the postal service has under review for …
