Technology and Science Departments Pre-Budget Reports Tonight

Today is Thursday, May 16. Here are five things you need to know. 1.) The School Committee will be presented with pre-budget reports for the technology and science departments at a meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the Superintendent’s Conference Room at Medford High School. 2.) Medford’s Donald Potts and four other Massport employees allegedly solicited and took bribes from cab drivers at Logan Airport in exchange for letting them cut other taxis in line, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Council to Receive Update on Pool Reconstruction

Medford City Council approved a total of $2.4 million for the reconstruction in 2012.

The Medford City Council will receive an update Tuesday on the status of the reconstruction of the Medford High School indoor pool. The update will take place during a committee of the whole meeting at 6 p.m. in room 207 of Medford City Hall. Here is what they have on tap for the whole evening, including their regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the Howard F. Alden Auditorium. The council has invited Mayor Michael McGlynn, Budget Director Stephanie Muccini Burke, owners project manager John Buckley and Medford Public School Superintendent Roy Belson to discuss the reconstruction. Ex-Bruin Bates to Coach Medford High Boys Hockey

School turns to its all-time leading scorer to turn around its fortunes.

The Medford High School boys hockey program has turned to a prolific alum as its new coach. Boston.com reported Shawn Bates, who played in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders, has been hired as the new head coach of the Mustangs. According to the website, Bates graduated from Medford in 1993 and is the school's all-time leading scorer with 103 goals and 139 assists. Bates played college hockey at Boston University, winning the national title in 1995. Bates was drafted in the fourth round of the 1993 NHL Draft by the Bruins and made his debut in the 1997-1998 season, according to his Hockey-Reference.com page. After four seasons in black and gold, Bates signed with the Islanders, where he played through …

Mustang Rowers Win 2013 Championships

Both the girls and boys teams took home Greater Boston League titles.

The Medford High School boys and girls rowing teams were victorious in their quests to win their respective 2013 Greater Boston League Championships last Sunday, according a post on the school website. The Mustangs competed against Malden, Cambridge Rindge and Latin and Somerville for the titles. According to the post, the wins are historic because it's the first time a Cambridge team has been defeated for a GBL title on the girls' side and just the second non-Cambridge winner ever on the boys' side. "This is a big win for a team started just seven years ago with twelve rowers and one coach," according to the school website. "This season the team has almost 60 rowers and three coaches." Schools Working on Tribute to Campbell

Boston.com reports the tribute could be presented near the end of the school year.

Medford Public Schools are planning a tribute to 2001 Medford High School graduate Krystle Campbell, who was killed in the April 15 bombing attacks at the Boston Marathon, according to Boston.com. Superintendent Roy Belson told Boston.com the tribute would likely be presented near graduation or at the end of the school year, saying they want to give the Campbell family "a little bit of time first." Campbell was one of three people killed in the attacks. Her funeral was held Monday at St. Joseph's Church in Medford and she was later laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery. She most recently lived in Arlington and worked as a restaurant manager.

Medford Native Designs T-Shirt to Benefit Bombing Victims

Kevin Zwirble put his graphic design talents to work; 100 percent of profits will go to One Fund Boston.

Living hundreds of miles away, Medford native Kevin Zwirble had a helpless feeling after the bombings at the Boston Marathon last week. Zwirble, now a graphic designer living in the Baltimore area, decided to put his talents to use to help those impacted. The 2000 Medford High School graduate has designed a t-shirt currently for sale on custom t-shirt website Ink to the People All profits from the t-shirt sales will go to the One Fund Boston, Zwirble said in phone interview with Patch Tuesday afternoon. The design features two sneaker footprints that form a heart, with the date of the bombings etched in one of the footprints. Underneath, there are the words "Boston" and "ONE CITY. ONE HEART." Medford Schools Had 'Very Good' Day Monday

Monday was the first day back at school for students in Medford since the bombings at the Boston Marathon a week earlier, and things went smoothly according to the city's top school official. Medford Public Schools Superintendent Roy Belson said the schools "had a very good day," and he was unaware of any kind of issues or incidents at any of the city's schools. The bombings claimed the life of 2001 Medford High School graduate Krystle Campbell, who was laid to rest Monday. Belson said counseling services were available to students Monday, but he didn't know if they were utilized at all. School Community: Campbell Was 'Vibrant,' 'Energetic'

Medford Schools Superintendent Roy Belson said that despite the school vacation week, he's had conversations with those in the schools who remember Krystle Campbell. The 29-year-old Medford native who died in the Monday bombings at the Boston Marathon was a 2001 graduate of Medford High School. "They remember her as a vibrant, energetic young woman," said Belson after Wednesday's prayer vigil at Grace Episcopal Church in Medford. "I always think of the kids, as a school committee member, as my kids," said Medford School Committee member Paulette Van der Kloot. "This is just such a loss for us."
